There was a wall keeping fear at bay keeping it away from my inner world from my conscious thoughts. I built it when I was young, almost too young to remember. It took hypnosis to resurrect the memory of its inception. I knew this wall was blocking me from more than fear— also from growth, from wholeness, from strength, from my voice, and it needed to be dismantled. I returned to the memory of its construction. And I waited. I watched. I asked, why was this needed? and how can I help you need it no more? I found the answer in a little girl, no more than two, afraid of being too big too much too dangerous too hurtful of having her own needs or needing too much. She knew she was loved when she was needed, when she was helpful, when she was “good”. In order to help others and not need anything herself she erected a wall so big it would keep out all of her fears. And it did. It blocked them out. It didn’t wipe them out, but it helped her survive. It was time for the wall dividing her life to come down. She knocked it down with the blow of a new belief in its direction. On the other side of the broken wall, she found not a mountain of fear, but a whisper of fear which was able to move through her like a chilly, almost delicious, breeze. And she found: the rest of herself— her strength, her voice, her courage, her wings.
